There were many uses of artillery in the war of 1812. The main bombs used were howitzers and mortars. They were huge cannons that shot out big bombs that could go over walls and blow fortresses up. Howitzers could be used for straight shooting as well as shooting like a mortar over walls. Because the mortar could not have its elevation changed to any great degree, the gunpowder charge was changed to how much range was needed.
