1795 Springfield- Copied from the 1766 model French musket, the 1795 Springfield infantry musket was the very first official model musket of the United States. Initially with the bayonet on the bottom of the barrel, this was rotated to the top of the barrel in 1797 and the look remained the same to the end of the War.. The musket gets its name from the first government armoury of the United States in Springfield, Mass. Today the armoury is a National park.
The gun had a 69 Caliber musket ball barrel, and was a flintlock action rifle. It was shot by good soldiers 2-3 shots per minute.
This is a video of a man shooting the Springfield 1795 Rifle.
